The Journey of a Beginning Farmer :: As a child I spent most of my life in town living with my mom, but whenever I visited my Dad and his side of the family it was on the farm. From my earliest memories I have always wanted to be a farmer (except when I wanted to be a cowboy). Now, I am trying to fulfill that dream. This will be a journal of that journey :: my research, my joys, my frustrations, and all of the things that go along with the beginning farmer.

Frozen Tundra Farming
Well, it must not be frozen all of the time, because I just ran across an article about the growing number of direct marketing farms in Alaska. I encourage you to read the article titled, "Despite Alaska's Challenges, New Farmers Take Root," from the Christian Science Monitor (this is not an endorsement of them...). I don't have much time to blog about it today because youth group is starting and we have some interesting developments going on with our building project, but do read the article when you have a spare moment because it is pretty cool (pun intended).

I've heard you can grow a pretty mean cabbage up there (you know, about the size of a beach ball). The summers are pretty short but apparently for crops that like cooler temperatures, the super-long days more than make up for it.
