The Journey of a Beginning Farmer :: As a child I spent most of my life in town living with my mom, but whenever I visited my Dad and his side of the family it was on the farm. From my earliest memories I have always wanted to be a farmer (except when I wanted to be a cowboy). Now, I am trying to fulfill that dream. This will be a journal of that journey :: my research, my joys, my frustrations, and all of the things that go along with the beginning farmer.

A Diverse Farm ...
As you can see from the picture above there was a new litter of pigs born Sunday night in the storm and things seem to be going well. But, if you look closely at the picture you will also notice a chicken in the foreground. I think it's a perfect example of the diverse farm and also helps remind me that the chickens are out doing their job in the pig lot, the pasture, and all around the farm. Plus, they are laying eggs ... although I wouldn't mind having some more egg layers around!

Beautiful babies ! Our chickens also hang out with our pigs often resting on top of them for worth. Great way to keep parasites under control in the pig pastures.
Congratz on the new arrivals.
Your post gave me a chuckle since our chickens have become such a big part of life on our place. From sun up to sun down, they are constantly gleaning the yard, pasture, sheds, and lots for bugs, worms, and lost grain. Cleaning a stall, chickens are there. Milking a goat, chickens are there. Thanks to the hard work, our place has become nearly tick free. Thanks for the hard work ladies!
Ethan, I saw your booth at the market today, but didn't get a chance to stop and talk as both times you were busy with a line of customers. Hope to next time you are there! Nice job on your sign too! I was surprised your wife wasn't there, but then again not. You do a super job, enjoy your blog, hear great things about you from my brother who lives by you, hope to talk to you next time, and meet your wife!
Did you guys see that Iowa pigs hit the New York Times?

Haven't seen a post from you in quite a while. Hope everything is O.K.
